The most unique dab pick that you will ever find. The concept for these dab picks was born on our trip to Canna Con Albuquerque. We found a unique spot called Casa Grande Trading Post. This shop is in the middle of absolutely nowhere there is the small town of Los Cerrillos and in that town, there is a trading post that has a ton of antiques and minerals there. It was one of the coolest finds of the trip and we were also able to pick up Cholla Cactus while eventually we are going to turn into some amazing cactus and resin dab picks.
Each one of these Cholla Cactus pieces are about 2 feet long. We cut them down to a workable size around 4 inches. After these get cut down, we then put them into a HDPE mold that we built. Once they are secured in the mold, we mix up some alumilite casting resin and throw in some Eye Candy Pigment and pour it into the molds. These picks take about 5 hours to hardened and then around 5 days to full cure before we can work them.
After the picks are fully cured, we can finally get them onto our lathe and turn them down to the shape and size we feel fits the pick. After turning them down we sand and wet sand them so they can get a glass like finish. Although this is the longest and most boring part of the process, this has to be the most satisfying part because this is where you can really see the detail of the honeycomb like cactus and also the unique pattern of the resin really come out.
Even though most of these picks are poured in batches of 3 they are all 100% unique, because the resin is such a free-flowing art form that you do not know exactly what the pattern or colors are going to come out as until you get them turned down. After years of working with casting resin and having a lot of not so good results we have been able to really learn the timing and to how to pour resin and getting good results.
After the dab pick gets sanded and polished, it is onto the final stage of drilling a small hole at the bottom and getting a stainless-steel pick glued in.
